PART 3 — THE SECRET INSIDE PAIGE’S DIAPER BAG
“Then we need to find out who had access to this child before she entered Ally’s house.”
The investigator’s words seemed to change the temperature in the room.
I stared at her.
Until that moment, everything had happened so quickly that I hadn’t really allowed myself to think beyond Paige’s injury.
But now one question was impossible to ignore.
Who had been with Paige before Kate brought her to me?
“Kate and her husband,” I said slowly.
The investigator’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“His name?”
“Ryan.”
“And was Ryan with your sister when they dropped Paige off?”
“Yes.”
“Did he come inside?”
I shook my head.
“He stayed in the car.”
The investigator wrote something down.
“What time did they arrive?”
“Around nine.”
“And how long were they at your house?”
“Kate was inside maybe five minutes.”
“What was her behavior like?”
That question made me hesitate.
Because suddenly I was remembering things I hadn’t considered important.
Kate hadn’t taken off her coat.
She hadn’t sat down.
She hadn’t asked whether I had enough formula.
She hadn’t given me Paige’s normal list of feeding times.
She had simply handed me the diaper bag, kissed Paige quickly, and kept glancing through my front window toward Ryan’s car.
“She seemed nervous,” I said.
“Nervous how?”
“I thought she was just tired. But she kept looking outside. And she said something strange before she left.”
The investigator stopped writing.
“What did she say?”
I repeated it exactly.
“You’re the one person I trust to make the call if she gets too fussy.”
The investigator’s pen remained motionless above the page.
The doctor looked at her.
Neither woman spoke for several seconds.
“What?” I asked.
The investigator didn’t answer my question directly.
Instead, she asked another.
“Has your sister ever asked you to take Paige to a doctor before?”
“No.”
“Has she ever left Paige with you unexpectedly?”
“No.”
“Has she ever said anything about being afraid to take the baby somewhere herself?”
My heartbeat quickened.
“No.”
The investigator looked toward the diaper bag.
“Did your sister pack this?”
“I assume so.”
“Did you add anything to it after Paige arrived?”
“Nothing.”
She nodded toward the chair.
“Please sit down, Ally.”
I didn’t want to sit.
Paige was somewhere behind those doors.
My sister was accusing me of hurting her.
And now a county investigator was examining a diaper bag as though it might contain evidence.
But my knees were beginning to shake, so I lowered myself into the chair.
The investigator carefully removed items one at a time.
Three diapers.
A package of wipes.
Two bottles.
Formula.
A pink pacifier.
An extra sleeper.
A small stuffed rabbit.
Diaper cream.
Everything looked normal.
Then she reached into a narrow side pocket.
Her hand stopped.
She looked inside.
“What is it?” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she pulled out a small makeup tube.
Beige concealer.
My stomach twisted.
“I’ve never seen that before.”
“I know,” she said calmly. “Don’t touch it.”
She placed it inside an evidence bag.
But she wasn’t finished.
Her gloved fingers went back into the same pocket.
This time she removed a folded piece of paper.
The investigator opened it.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
She glanced at me.
“Is this your sister’s handwriting?”
She held the paper where I could see it without touching it.
There were only a few words.
IF SHE WON’T STOP CRYING, CALL ALLY.
Underneath that was my address.
My phone number.
And beneath those, written much more heavily:
DO NOT TAKE HER TO DR. MORGAN.
I felt something cold move through my chest.
“Dr. Morgan is Paige’s pediatrician.”
“Why would your sister write that?”
“I don’t know.”
“Has she ever complained about Dr. Morgan?”
“No. She loves her.”
The investigator folded the note again.
“Was anyone else supposed to watch Paige recently?”
“I don’t know.”
“Think carefully.”
I closed my eyes.
Then I remembered a conversation from the previous week.
Kate had called me Wednesday evening.
She had sounded distracted.
She asked whether I would be home Saturday.
At the time, she said she and Ryan might go shopping.
But she’d asked another question too.
“Are you going anywhere?”
I had laughed.
I told her my exciting Saturday plans involved laundry and cleaning the kitchen.
Then Kate had asked:
“So you’ll definitely be home?”
At the time, it had seemed harmless.
Now it didn’t.
“She knew I’d be here,” I whispered.
The investigator’s gaze stayed on me.
“Ally, I’m going to ask you something difficult.”
I braced myself.
“Do you believe your sister knew Paige was injured when she brought her to you?”
My first instinct was to say no.
Kate was my sister.
The girl who used to crawl into my bed during thunderstorms.
The teenager who cried in my arms after her first heartbreak.
The woman whose hand I’d held while she was in labor with Paige.
I wanted desperately to believe she hadn’t known.
But then I remembered the concealer.
Someone had applied it.
Paige was six months old.
She couldn’t have done it herself.
And Kate had dressed her that morning.
“I don’t know,” I whispered.
That was the most painful answer I’d ever given.
The trauma doors opened again.
The doctor returned.
This time there was no investigator beside her.
There was a pediatric orthopedic specialist.
I stood immediately.
“How bad is it?”
The doctor pulled a chair closer.
“Paige has a fracture of her left femur.”
My hand flew to my mouth.
For a second, I couldn’t breathe.
A fracture.
My six-month-old niece had a broken thigh bone.
“How?”
“That is what we need to determine.”
“Could she have rolled off a bed?”
The specialist answered carefully.
“We evaluate the injury pattern together with the child’s developmental abilities and the history we’re given. Paige isn’t independently mobile in a way that would explain this on her own. We need a complete assessment.”
I started crying.
Not loudly.
The tears simply came.
“Is she going to be okay?”
“We expect the fracture to heal,” the specialist said. “Our immediate concern is making sure Paige is safe and determining whether there are any additional injuries.”
Additional injuries.
I looked at the doctor.
“What do you mean?”
“We’re doing further imaging.”
My stomach dropped again.
“Because you think there might be more?”
“We don’t know yet.”
The investigator returned and stepped into the room.
“Ally, your sister and her husband have arrived.”
Every muscle in my body tightened.
“Where?”
“They’re being interviewed separately.”
“Can I see Kate?”
“Not yet.”
“Can she see Paige?”
“Not right now.”
I looked through the glass doors.
I couldn’t see my sister.
But somewhere down that hallway, Kate was sitting in another room.
And Ryan was somewhere else.
For the first time in my life, I was afraid of both of them.
My phone buzzed.
Everyone looked at it.
A message had appeared from Kate.
I stared at her name.
The investigator noticed.
“Don’t delete anything.”
I opened the message.
Kate had written:
Please tell them you dropped her.
I stopped breathing.
The investigator read my face immediately.
“What did she send?”
I handed her the phone.
She read the message.
Her expression became completely still.
A second message arrived.
Ally, please. Just say it happened accidentally.
Then another.
You don’t understand what will happen if Ryan gets blamed.
I felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath me.
The investigator photographed the messages.
“Do not respond yet.”
“She’s asking me to confess to something I didn’t do.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“We’re going to find out.”
But I already knew one thing.
Kate wasn’t confused.
She wasn’t panicking because she thought I had hurt Paige.
She knew I hadn’t.
Which meant the accusation she’d made earlier wasn’t a mistake.
It was deliberate.
My own sister had tried to put her daughter’s broken leg on me.
I sat down again because I suddenly couldn’t feel my knees.
“Why would she do this?”
The investigator crouched slightly so we were eye level.
“Ally, I need you to focus on Paige right now. Everything else can come later.”
I nodded.
But another message appeared.
This one wasn’t from Kate.
It was from an unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Then I read the preview.
YOU NEED TO CHECK THE CAMERA.
I stared at the screen.
“What camera?”
The investigator straightened.
“Who sent that?”
“I don’t know.”
I opened the message.
YOU DON’T KNOW ME. MY NAME IS MELISSA. I LIVE ACROSS FROM KATE AND RYAN. PLEASE DON’T TELL RYAN I CONTACTED YOU. CHECK THEIR DOORBELL CAMERA FROM THURSDAY NIGHT BEFORE HE DELETES IT.
My skin prickled.
The investigator read it over my shoulder.
“Do you know a Melissa?”
“No.”
“Does your sister have neighbors across the street?”
“Yes. But I’ve never met them.”
Another message arrived.
I HEARD PAIGE SCREAMING.
Then:
I SAW KATE RUN OUTSIDE HOLDING HER.
Then:
RYAN CAME AFTER HER.
My hands began trembling so badly that the investigator gently took the phone from me.
She read the final message.
Whatever she saw made her stand completely upright.
“What?”
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she walked several feet away and made a phone call.
I caught only pieces.
“Potential digital evidence.”
“Thursday evening.”
“Preserve immediately.”
“Neighbor witness.”
When she returned, her tone had changed.
“Ally, we’re going to handle this.”
“What happened Thursday?”
“We don’t know yet.”
“But Melissa heard Paige screaming.”
“Yes.”
“Kate told me Paige started teething last night.”
The investigator nodded.
That was when the timeline hit me.
If Paige had been injured Thursday night, then she’d spent all of Friday with a fractured leg.
All Friday night.
And Saturday morning.
Without medical care.
Someone had covered the bruising with concealer.
Someone had dressed her.
Then Kate had brought her to my house.
Why?
My mind returned to those words.
You’re the one person I trust to make the call.
My stomach turned.
“Oh my God.”
The investigator looked at me.
“What?”
I whispered the thought I didn’t want to believe.
“She wanted me to find it.”
The investigator said nothing.
“She knew I’d take Paige to the hospital.”
Still nothing.
“She couldn’t take Paige herself because the doctors would ask how she got hurt.”
The investigator’s expression remained careful.
“That is one possibility.”
“And she thought she could blame me afterward.”
“We don’t know her intentions yet.”
But Kate’s messages were still glowing on my phone.
Please tell them you dropped her.
I covered my face.
I didn’t know whether to hate my sister or be terrified for her.
Then shouting erupted somewhere down the hallway.
A man’s voice.
Ryan.
I couldn’t understand the words at first.
Then I heard my name.
“ALLY DID IT!”
A door slammed.
Someone shouted for him to sit down.
Then Kate screamed.
“STOP!”
I stood.
The investigator immediately moved toward the hallway.
“Stay here.”
But before she reached the door, Kate appeared behind the glass.
Two hospital security officers were with her.
Her face was white.
Her eyes found mine.
For one second, neither of us moved.
Then she pulled away from the security officer and pressed both hands against the glass.
“Ally!”
I couldn’t move.
“Tell them!” Ryan shouted somewhere behind her.
Kate flinched.
That tiny movement told me more than any sentence could have.
She was afraid of him.
But fear didn’t erase what she’d done.
She had blamed me.
She had asked me to lie.
And her baby had suffered while she stayed silent.
The investigator opened the door just enough to speak to security.
Kate started sobbing.
“Please let me talk to my sister.”
“No,” the investigator said.
“Please.”
“Kate, return to the interview room.”
Kate looked directly at me.
“Ally, I’m sorry.”
My throat tightened.
“For what?”
She shook her head frantically.
“I can’t say it here.”
“Your daughter’s leg is broken.”
“I know.”
Those two words destroyed whatever hope I had left.
You don’t say I know unless you already knew.
“You knew?”
Kate started crying harder.
“I was going to fix it.”
“How do you fix a baby’s broken leg without taking her to a hospital?”
Ryan shouted again from the hallway.
“KATE!”
My sister froze.
The investigator looked toward the sound.
Then Kate said something so quietly I almost didn’t hear it.
“He didn’t mean to hurt her.”
My entire body went cold.
“Who?”
Kate closed her eyes.
“Ryan?”
She didn’t answer.
“Kate, did Ryan hurt Paige?”
Her lips trembled.
Then she whispered:
“It wasn’t supposed to happen.”
The investigator immediately stepped between us.
“Kate, don’t say anything else out here.”
But Kate seemed unable to stop.
“He got frustrated.”
I felt sick.
“With Paige?”
Kate nodded once.
“He’d been trying to get her to sleep. She wouldn’t stop crying.”
My vision blurred.
“What did he do?”
Kate covered her mouth.
The investigator repeated firmly:
“Kate. Stop talking and return to the interview room.”
But then Ryan appeared at the end of the hallway.
A security officer was holding his arm.
His face was red.
“You’re really going to do this?” he shouted at Kate.
She recoiled.
Ryan looked at me.
“She’s lying.”
“Don’t talk to me.”
“Ally, she did this.”
Kate stared at him.
Something changed in her expression.
Not fear.
Not exactly.
It looked like disbelief.
“You said you’d tell the truth,” she whispered.
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“You think I’m going down for you?”
Kate went completely still.
The investigator stepped toward him.
“Ryan, return to the interview room.”
But Ryan kept talking.
“Ask her why she had the concealer.”
Kate’s face drained of color.
My heart pounded.
Ryan pointed at my sister.
“She covered it.”
“I know she covered it,” I snapped. “The question is why Paige was injured.”
“Ask Kate.”
Kate shook her head.
“Don’t.”
Ryan’s mouth twisted.
“You want honesty? Fine.”
“Ryan, stop.”
“She was holding Paige when it happened.”
Kate made a broken sound.
“You’re lying.”
“Am I?”
“Yes!”
The hallway exploded into overlapping voices.
Security moved Ryan backward.
Kate sobbed.
The investigator ordered everyone separated.
Then the doctor suddenly emerged from the trauma room.
And every voice stopped.
Her face was different now.
Not alarmed.
Not confused.
Grim.
She looked at the investigator first.
Then at me.
“We completed the additional imaging.”
My heart stopped.
“Is Paige okay?”
The doctor hesitated.
“We found another injury.”
Kate’s crying stopped instantly.
“What injury?” I asked.
The doctor looked directly at Kate.
“A healing rib fracture.”
Silence.
The hallway became so quiet I could hear the fluorescent lights humming.
Healing.
Not new.
Not Thursday.
Older.
“How old?” the investigator asked.
“We’ll need radiology to give the formal interpretation, but it is not consistent with an injury that occurred this morning.”
I looked at Kate.
Her mouth had fallen open.
Ryan stopped struggling against security.
And suddenly this wasn’t about one terrible night anymore.
Someone had hurt Paige before.
Maybe days earlier.
Maybe weeks earlier.
The investigator turned toward Ryan.
“Did you know about this?”
“No.”
Then she looked at Kate.
“Did you?”
Kate shook her head rapidly.
“No. I swear.”
For the first time, I couldn’t tell who was lying.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
The same number Melissa had texted from.
The investigator nodded for me to answer.
I put it on speaker.
“Hello?”
A woman’s frightened voice whispered:
“Is this Ally?”
“Yes.”
“I’m Melissa.”
“I’m at the hospital.”
“I know.”
My eyes moved toward the investigator.
Melissa continued.
“I found something.”
“What?”
“The camera footage.”
The investigator immediately stepped closer.
“Melissa, this is Investigator Ramirez. Please do not delete or alter anything.”
“I won’t.”
“Can you tell me what you found?”
There was a long silence.
Then Melissa said:
“The camera didn’t record inside their house. But it recorded their driveway.”
My heart hammered.
“What does it show?”
“Thursday night, Kate came running outside with Paige.”
Kate closed her eyes.
“Ryan followed her.”
Another pause.
“And then?”
Melissa’s breathing became uneven.
“He took the baby from Kate.”
I looked toward Ryan.
His face had changed.
“And?”
“Kate tried to take Paige back.”
Ryan suddenly shouted:
“TURN THAT OFF!”
Security grabbed him.
Melissa heard him through the phone.
“Oh God. Is he there?”
“Yes.”
“Then you need to listen to the rest.”
“What rest?”
Melissa lowered her voice.
“Ryan wasn’t the only person who came out of the house.”
Kate’s eyes snapped open.
I stared at her.
“What do you mean?”
Melissa answered:
“There was another woman.”
I looked at Kate.
She looked completely confused.
“Who?”
“I don’t know her name,” Melissa said. “But I’ve seen her there before.”
Ryan stopped shouting.
For the first time since I’d seen him, he looked frightened.
Kate slowly turned toward her husband.
“What woman?”
Ryan said nothing.
“Ryan.”
Nothing.
“What woman?”
Melissa spoke again.
“She came outside about thirty seconds after Ryan.”
Kate’s face twisted.
“What did she look like?”
“Blonde. Maybe mid-forties. She was wearing medical scrubs.”
The doctor beside me stiffened.
Medical scrubs.
I remembered the note from the diaper bag.
DO NOT TAKE HER TO DR. MORGAN.
The investigator apparently remembered it too.
“Melissa,” she said, “can you describe the scrubs?”
“Dark blue.”
Kate suddenly grabbed the wall.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
She whispered it again.
“No.”
“Kate?” I said.
She stared at Ryan.
“You told me she left.”
Ryan didn’t respond.
“WHO?” I demanded.
Kate looked at me.
Her face had become almost gray.
Then she said a name I recognized immediately.
“Dr. Morgan’s nurse.”
My stomach dropped.
“What?”
“Her name is Lauren.”
The investigator’s posture changed.
“How do you know Lauren was at your house?”
Kate began shaking.
“Because Ryan knows her.”
The meaning behind those words hung in the air.
But before anyone could ask another question, Melissa interrupted.
“There’s something else.”
We all went silent.
“What?” the investigator asked.
“I zoomed in on the footage.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“On what?”
“The woman.”
Melissa’s voice trembled.
“She wasn’t carrying a purse when she came outside.”
I didn’t understand.
Then Melissa finished:
“She was carrying a makeup bag.”
My eyes went straight to the evidence bag containing the beige concealer.
And suddenly the injury, the cosmetics, the note warning us away from Paige’s pediatrician, and the mysterious woman in medical scrubs were no longer separate pieces.
They were connected.
But I still couldn’t see how.
Then Kate whispered:
“Ally… there’s something I haven’t told you.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
She glanced toward Ryan.
He was staring at her with naked warning in his eyes.
Kate swallowed.
“The shopping trip today wasn’t real.”
My heart thudded.
“What are you talking about?”
“We weren’t going shopping.”
“Then where were you going?”
Kate began crying again.
“I was supposed to meet someone.”
“Who?”
She looked toward the investigator.
Then back at me.
“The person who told me what really happened to Paige.”
Ryan lunged forward.
Security stopped him immediately.
“KATE, SHUT UP!”
She screamed back:
“No! I’m done protecting you!”
The investigator ordered Ryan removed from the hallway.
As security dragged him toward another room, he kept shouting.
“You have no idea what you’re doing!”
Kate watched him disappear.
Then she turned toward me.
And what she said next made every hair on my arms rise.
“Ally, Ryan didn’t ask me to bring Paige to you this morning.”
I stared at her.
“Then who did?”
Kate’s eyes filled with tears.
“The woman from the camera.”
Lauren.
Before I could respond, the trauma doors opened again.
A nurse hurried toward the doctor holding a phone.
“Doctor, you need to see this.”
The doctor looked at the screen.
Her expression changed instantly.
“What is it?” the investigator asked.
The nurse swallowed.
“Dr. Morgan’s office just called.”
Everyone froze.
The nurse looked at Kate.
“They’ve been trying to reach Paige’s parents since yesterday.”
Kate stared at her.
“Why?”
The nurse’s answer came quietly.
“Because someone accessed Paige’s medical record Thursday night.”
My pulse began pounding in my ears.
“Who?”
The nurse looked toward the investigator.
“They’re checking the access log now.”
Then her phone rang again.
She answered.
Listened.
Her eyes widened.
And she slowly lowered the phone.
“They found the login.”
Kate gripped my arm.
“Whose was it?”
The nurse looked directly at her.
“It belonged to Lauren.”
Nobody moved.
Then she added the part that changed everything.
“And according to the clinic manager, Lauren hasn’t worked at Dr. Morgan’s office for three weeks.”
Kate’s grip tightened painfully around my wrist.
“What do you mean?”
“She was fired.”
The investigator stepped forward.
“For what?”
The nurse looked at the doctor before answering.
“For accessing pediatric patient records without authorization.”
A terrible silence settled over us.
Then my phone vibrated again.
One new text.
Unknown number.
Not Melissa’s.
I opened it.
There was no greeting.
No explanation.
Only a photograph.
My stomach turned.
It showed Paige asleep in her crib.
The photo had clearly been taken inside Kate’s house.
And judging from the clothes Paige was wearing, it had been taken recently.
Underneath the image were seven words:
ASK YOUR SISTER WHO PAIGE’S FATHER REALLY IS.
I stared at the message.
Then at Kate.
Her face told me everything before she spoke.
Because my sister didn’t look confused.
She looked terrified.
And suddenly I understood that Paige’s broken leg might only be the first secret we had uncovered.
Whatever Kate had been hiding had begun long before Thursday night.
And someone had just decided to make sure I learned the rest.
