PART 4: THE MAN BEHIND THE BADGE The handle turned slowly. Ethan heard it before Laura did. He was staring at the ceiling, trying to ignore the deep throbbing beneath the braces around his legs, when the door opened three inches. A man in hospital maintenance clothes stepped inside. Gray cap. Blue work jacket. Gloves. He pushed an empty wheelchair in front of him. Laura looked up. “Can I help you?” The man smiled. “Transport.” “For what?” “Radiology.” Laura frowned. “No one told us about another scan.” The smile disappeared. Ethan looked at the man’s jacket. Something silver flashed beneath it. A badge. His heart began hammering. “Mom.” Laura turned. Ethan’s eyes were fixed on the stranger. “That’s not hospital security.” The man moved. Fast. His hand disappeared beneath his jacket. Laura screamed. But before he could pull out whatever he was reaching for, the door slammed violently into his shoulder. The man stumbled sideways. Caleb stood in the doorway. For one second, father and stranger stared at each other. Then Caleb saw the hand beneath the jacket. His old instincts took over. He grabbed the man’s wrist, drove him against the wall, and forced the object from his hand. It hit the floor. Not a gun. A syringe. Laura stared at it. “What is that?” The stranger twisted violently, trying to escape. Caleb pinned his arm behind his back. “Who sent you?” The man said nothing. “Who sent you?” Footsteps thundered down the hallway. Hospital security appeared. Behind them came Dr. Marcus Vance. “What happened?” Caleb pointed at the syringe. “Don’t touch it.” Marcus stared at the man. Then at Ethan. His face changed instantly. “Security, lock this floor down.” The stranger suddenly laughed. Caleb froze. It wasn’t a nervous laugh. It was almost amused. “You really should’ve stayed invisible, Reaper.” Caleb’s grip tightened. Laura’s face went pale. “Why did he call you that?” The man looked over his shoulder. “They told us you’d gotten soft.” Caleb leaned closer. “Who is ‘they’?” The stranger smiled. “You already know.” Security pulled him away. Caleb watched until the elevator doors closed. Then he turned toward Marcus. “Find out what was in that syringe.” Marcus nodded. “And Marcus?” “Yeah?” “Don’t give it to local law enforcement.” Marcus understood immediately. “I’ll contact state investigators myself.” Caleb returned to Ethan’s bedside. Laura was standing beside the window with both arms wrapped around herself. “Caleb.” He knew what was coming. “What is Reaper?” Ethan looked at him too. Caleb pulled the chair closer. For seventeen years, he had protected his family by telling them almost nothing about the life he had lived before them. Now that silence was putting them in danger. So he finally began talking. “Before I met your mother, I served with a classified military unit.” Laura stared at him. “You told me you were Army.” “I was.” “But not the rest.” “No.” Caleb looked down. “Our unit handled missions involving stolen intelligence, weapons trafficking, compromised officials—things that were kept outside normal channels.” Ethan whispered, “And Reaper?” “My callsign.” Laura closed her eyes. “How much have you hidden from me?” “Enough that I thought you’d never need to know.” “That isn’t an answer.” “No.” Caleb looked at her. “And you deserve the entire answer.” But Ethan interrupted. “The red box.” Caleb turned. “What’s inside?” Caleb hesitated. Then he told them. Seventeen years earlier, Caleb’s final operation had taken place near a remote border crossing overseas. His team had been ordered to intercept a courier carrying intelligence about an international smuggling network. The mission collapsed almost immediately. Someone had leaked their route. Their extraction point was compromised. Seven men died. Caleb and four others escaped. Before dying, an intelligence officer handed Caleb a red metal case. Inside were paper documents, photographs, identification records, and an encrypted storage device. Evidence suggesting that the ambush hadn’t been organized solely by foreign militants. Someone connected to the operation had sold them out. Caleb had been ordered to surrender the case afterward. He refused. Because the officer who came to collect it was someone mentioned in the documents. So Caleb hid it. Then he disappeared into civilian life. Laura stared at him. “You’ve had evidence like that underneath an old warehouse for seventeen years?” “Yes.” “And never told anyone?” “I told myself everyone involved was gone.” Ethan looked at him. “But Sheriff Vance isn’t.” “No.” Caleb stood. “And now he wants the box.” His phone buzzed. Ghost. Caleb answered. “Talk.” “We have a problem.” “What?” “I checked the warehouse.” Caleb’s pulse changed. “You touched the box?” “No.” “Then what happened?” “The floorboards where you hid it have been disturbed.” Caleb went silent. “When?” “Recently.” “Is the box there?” “I don’t know. I followed your order not to touch anything.” Caleb looked through the hospital window. “Get everyone out.” “Already moving.” “And Ghost?” “Yeah?” “Someone knows where we are.” Caleb ended the call. Less than twenty minutes later, Marcus returned. He closed the hospital-room door. “The syringe contained a strong sedative.” Laura went white. Marcus continued. “At that dose, especially after surgery and pain medication, Ethan could have stopped breathing.” Caleb stared at the syringe sealed inside an evidence bag. This was no longer intimidation. Someone had just tried to silence his son. A state investigator arrived shortly afterward. Special Agent Rebecca Sloan. Mid-forties. Dark suit. No unnecessary introductions. She walked into Ethan’s room carrying a recorder and a thick folder. “Mr. Vance?” Caleb stood. “Yes.” “I’m taking control of the investigation into your son’s shooting.” Caleb studied her. “Why?” “Because three deputies from Livingston County contacted the state independently this morning.” Caleb blinked. “They reported evidence tampering.” Sloan opened the folder. “Your son’s clothing was improperly handled.” Another page. “The alleged narcotics recovered from his truck were logged forty-eight minutes after Sheriff Vance entered the evidence room alone.” Another. “The sheriff ordered nearby surveillance footage collected before an outside investigator had been notified.” Another. “And the body camera he claimed malfunctioned?” Sloan looked directly at Caleb. “It didn’t malfunction.” Laura stepped forward. “Then where’s the recording?” “Deleted.” Ethan whispered, “Can you recover it?” Sloan’s expression remained controlled. “We’re trying.” Caleb asked the question that mattered. “Why are deputies suddenly talking?” Sloan closed the folder. “Because your son isn’t the first.” Silence. She placed another file on the table. Six photographs. Six young men. Caleb looked at them. “What happened to them?” “Traffic stops involving Sheriff Vance during the past nine years.” One had a shattered hand. Another suffered spinal injuries. Another had been shot in the shoulder. One disappeared after filing a complaint. Laura covered her mouth. “Why wasn’t anything done?” “Complaints vanished. Evidence disappeared. Witnesses changed statements.” Sloan paused. “People were afraid.” Caleb stared at the photographs. Then he noticed something. The young men didn’t resemble Ethan. But something connected them. “What am I missing?” Sloan slid a sheet across the table. Names. Parents. Occupations. Military history. Caleb read the list once. Then again. His blood went cold. Every victim had a father, uncle, or grandfather who had served in intelligence, special operations, military contracting, or federal law enforcement. “This isn’t random,” Caleb said. “No,” Sloan replied. “And neither was Ethan.” Caleb looked at her sharply. “How much do you know about my service?” “Almost nothing.” “Good.” “But Sheriff Vance apparently knows more.” Sloan removed one final photograph. It showed Sheriff Vance twenty years younger. Different hair. Different name printed beneath the picture. Caleb recognized him instantly. Daniel Mercer. Caleb whispered the name. Sloan watched his reaction. “You know him.” “He was our liaison.” “For the operation?” Caleb nodded. “He gave us the route.” Sloan understood. “The route that led your team into the ambush.” “Yes.” Ethan stared at his father. “So he betrayed you?” Caleb didn’t answer immediately. “We suspected someone did.” Sloan leaned forward. “And the red box proves it?” Caleb’s eyes snapped toward her. “How do you know about the box?” Nobody moved. Sloan slowly raised both hands. “Caleb.” “How do you know?” “Because somebody mailed me a photograph of it yesterday.” She removed an envelope. Inside was a photograph. The red metal case. Sitting on a wooden table. Caleb recognized the scratches along its side. His box. Written underneath were six words. ASK REAPER WHAT HE DID WITH IT. Caleb stared at Sloan. “That picture is recent.” “How can you tell?” Caleb pointed. “I replaced that latch after I came home.” Sloan’s expression hardened. “Then somebody has accessed your hiding place.” Caleb pulled out his phone. Ghost answered immediately. “Go back.” “What?” “The box. Check it.” “Caleb—” “Now.” Several minutes passed. Nobody in the hospital room spoke. Then Ghost called back. His voice sounded different. “Reaper.” Caleb stood. “Tell me.” “The compartment is empty.” Laura gasped. Caleb closed his eyes. Seventeen years. The evidence had remained untouched for seventeen years. Now it was gone. Sloan asked, “Who knew where you hid it?” Caleb looked toward the window. “Five men.” “Your old team?” “Yes.” “And all five are here?” Caleb slowly shook his head. “Four are.” Sloan’s eyes narrowed. “Who’s missing?” Caleb didn’t answer. Because suddenly another memory surfaced. The final night overseas. The burning helicopter. The dying intelligence officer. And a fifth teammate who had disappeared during the evacuation. A man everyone assumed had been captured and killed. Thomas Rourke. Callsign Bishop. Caleb whispered, “There were six of us who survived the initial ambush.” Ghost, Anvil, Doc, Scythe. Caleb. And Bishop. “What happened to Bishop?” Ethan asked. “We never found his body.” Sloan’s phone rang. She answered. “Sloan.” Her expression changed. “When?” She listened. “Secure the scene. Nobody touches anything.” She hung up. “What happened?” Caleb asked. Sloan stared at him. “They found Sheriff Vance’s SUV.” “Where?” “Abandoned near the county line.” “And Vance?” “Gone.” Caleb’s phone buzzed almost immediately. Unknown number. A photograph arrived. Caleb opened it. The red box sat on a table. Beside it was Sheriff Vance. His hands were tied. Blood ran from his forehead. He was alive. Someone stood behind him. Only the person’s hand was visible. On one finger was a black ring. Caleb stopped breathing. He knew that ring. Every member of Caleb’s old unit had received one after their final deployment. Ghost still wore his. So did Caleb. But this ring had a tiny silver cross carved into its surface. Bishop’s ring. Another message appeared. YOU SHOULD HAVE OPENED THE BOX WHEN I TOLD YOU. Then another. COME ALONE IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH. A location followed. Caleb stared at it. An abandoned mountain lodge nearly fifty miles north. Sloan saw his face. “What?” Caleb locked the phone. “Nothing.” She stepped closer. “Don’t do that.” “Do what?” “Decide you’re protecting everyone by handling this yourself.” Caleb looked at his wife. Then Ethan. Then at the braces holding together what remained of his son’s knees. For seventeen years, Caleb had believed silence protected his family. He finally understood the truth. Silence had only protected the people hunting him. Caleb handed Sloan the phone. Her eyes widened. “Bishop?” Caleb nodded. “You think he’s alive?” “I think we’re about to find out.” Three hours later, state police quietly surrounded the mountain roads while Caleb, Ghost, Anvil, Doc, Scythe, and Sloan approached the abandoned lodge. Nobody rushed inside. Nobody wanted another ambush. Caleb stepped toward the porch. The front door was already open. Inside, one light burned. Sheriff Vance sat tied to a chair. The red box rested on the table. And behind it stood a tall man with white hair. Caleb stopped. Seventeen years disappeared. “Bishop.” The man smiled. “Hello, Reaper.” Caleb’s voice trembled despite himself. “We buried you.” “No.” Bishop shook his head. “You buried an empty coffin.” Sheriff Vance began struggling against the ropes. “Don’t listen to him!” Bishop ignored him. “You’ve spent seventeen years believing Mercer betrayed us.” Caleb stared at the sheriff. “Didn’t he?” Bishop placed one hand on the red box. “He did.” Sheriff Vance screamed, “He’s lying!” Bishop continued. “But Mercer wasn’t the only traitor.” Caleb felt something inside him turn cold. Ghost stepped closer. “Who else?” Bishop looked toward Caleb’s four former teammates. Then smiled sadly. “One of you.” Nobody moved. The lodge became completely silent. Caleb looked from Ghost… to Anvil… to Doc… to Scythe. Men he had trusted with his life. Men who had just returned because his son had been shot. Bishop opened the red box. Inside were photographs. Documents. A storage drive. And one sealed envelope. Caleb recognized his own name written across the front. Bishop slid it toward him. “What is this?” “The reason Ethan was shot.” Caleb opened the envelope. There was only one photograph inside. He pulled it out. And the world seemed to stop. It showed Sheriff Vance—Daniel Mercer—standing beside another man seventeen years earlier. Caleb knew the second man. He was standing inside the lodge right now. Caleb slowly raised his eyes from the photograph. One of his oldest friends took a step backward. And Caleb finally understood. The enemy hadn’t followed him home seventeen years later.
